Northeast Hearing Solutions office in Kulpmont, PA

Your hearing test here is free

No charge for the test, no charge for the conversation about your results, and no obligation attached to either. If your hearing turns out to be fine, we will tell you that and you will be on your way.

It is the sign on our door because it is the honest way to start. The cost question is what keeps most people waiting years longer than they needed to, so we take it off the table. Cost only comes up if you decide to go ahead with hearing aids, and that conversation happens afterwards, with real numbers.

Bring your insurance card and we will check your hearing benefit before you come in.

Book a free hearing test  or call (570) 373-5000

What the free test is, plainly: an evaluation of your hearing to work out whether hearing aids would help you. It is not a full audiological examination and it is not a medical diagnosis. If we find anything that should be looked at by a physician or an audiologist, we will tell you and refer you.

Northeast Hearing Solutions started in Kulpmont in 2006, and this is still where most of it happens. Free hearing tests, hearing aids fitted and verified to your own ears, earwax removal, and repairs on devices whoever sold them.

Finding us on Chestnut Street

We are at 963 Chestnut St, on the corner of Chestnut and South 10th Street.

Chestnut Street is Route 61, the main road through Kulpmont, so if you are coming from Mount Carmel or Shamokin you are already on it. Our building carries a large blue Northeast Hearing Solutions sign high on the wall that you can read from the road, and the ground-floor window has the neon OPEN sign and the free hearing test lettering. You will not need the house number once you have seen it.

Park on the South 10th Street side, where there is off-street parking beside the building. That saves you parallel parking on Route 61, which nobody enjoys. The entrance is at street level from the sidewalk, with the crossing right at the corner.

If you are the sort who would rather be sure, call (570) 373-5000 before you set off and we will talk you in.

Who we see here

The Kulpmont office covers the western half of our patch, which for most people is a short drive rather than an expedition:

  • Kulpmont, Marion Heights and Atlas
  • Mount Carmel, a few minutes east
  • Shamokin, Coal Township and Ranshaw
  • Elysburg and the surrounding Northumberland County communities
  • Danville, Riverside and Montour County, roughly fifteen minutes up Route 54

If you are coming from the Hazleton side, our Hazle Township office is open on different days and is very likely the easier trip. Tell us where you are starting from and we will say honestly which one makes more sense.

If you were a Danville patient

Our Danville office is closed, and those patients are seen here.

It is about fifteen minutes up Route 54, your records came with us, and you will see the same person you saw before. If you were a patient there and have not been in since, the Danville page explains what changed and what to do next.

Open Tuesdays and Thursdays

Two days a week here, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and it is worth being straight about that.

This is a two-person practice rather than a storefront with rotating staff, which is exactly why you get the same person at every visit and also why we are not open five days in one place. If Tuesday and Thursday do not work, Hazle Township is open Mondays and Wednesdays, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, same practitioner, same records. Plenty of patients use whichever office fits their week.

Call (570) 373-5000 and a person answers, not a menu. Most new patients are seen within the week.

What a first appointment actually looks like

Plan for about 90 minutes. That is not 90 minutes of testing.

Most of it is conversation. Where the day is hardest. Which voices you lose, and where. What you have quietly stopped doing because it got tiring — the family dinners, the phone calls, the club you sit at the back of. Two people can have near-identical results and need completely different things, and asking is the only way to find that out.

Then the testing, then your results explained properly, in the room, in plain language. Not a printout handed to you on the way out.

Bring your insurance card, a list of your medications, and if you can, somebody whose voice you struggle with most. Hearing a familiar voice during the evaluation tells us more than a recorded word list does.

What we do at this office

Walk in on a Tuesday or Thursday

You do not need an appointment for the small things. A cleaning, a wax guard, a device that has gone quiet, tubing that has gone hard — come in during open hours and we will look at it.

That applies to hearing aids you bought elsewhere too. We service most major manufacturers whoever sold them, and we will tell you what anything costs before we touch it. For patients fitted here, routine care is simply part of being our patient.

Insurance, including Geisinger Gold

We work with Geisinger Gold Medicare Advantage and many other plans, and we verify your hearing benefit before your appointment rather than after. Bring your card and we will do the checking.

If your plan does not cover as much as you hoped, financing options may include PowerPay and CareCredit. Every new fitting includes a 30-day trial, so the decision is never final on the day you make it.

Who you will see

Nevin G. Balliet, BC-HIS, a Nationally Board Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist, holder of Pennsylvania Hearing Aid Fitter License #F30648, and the founder of this practice. He opened it on this street in 2006 and still sees patients here personally.

When you call, Marissa picks up. After a visit or two she will know your voice.

Nobody here works on commission. Nevin built the practice on two rules — follow the Golden Rule, and always try to do the right thing — and being locally owned is what makes that possible. There is no head office setting targets, so the right answer for you and the right answer for the practice can be the same answer.

Voted best hearing aid specialist in the area nine years running by the people who live here.

Book a free hearing test, or call (570) 373-5000 and we will find you a time.

Common questions

Where exactly is the Kulpmont office?

963 Chestnut St, on the corner of Chestnut and South 10th Street. Chestnut Street is Route 61, the main road through Kulpmont, and our building carries a large blue Northeast Hearing Solutions sign you can read from the road. Look for the neon OPEN sign and the free hearing test lettering in the window.

Where do I park at the Kulpmont office?

There is off-street parking beside the building on the South 10th Street side, so you do not have to parallel park on Route 61. The entrance is at street level from the sidewalk.

When is the Kulpmont office open?

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. If those days do not suit you, our Hazle Township office is open Mondays and Wednesdays, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with the same practitioner and the same records. Call (570) 373-5000 or book online and we will find a time.

Which towns does the Kulpmont office serve?

Kulpmont, Mount Carmel, Marion Heights, Atlas, Shamokin and Coal Township, Ranshaw, Elysburg, and across Northumberland County. We also see patients from Danville, Riverside and Montour County, which is roughly 15 minutes up Route 54 since the Danville office closed.

Is the hearing test really free?

Yes. No charge for the test, none for the conversation about your results, and no obligation attached to either. The free hearing test evaluates your hearing to work out whether hearing aids would help you; it is not a full audiological examination. If your hearing is fine, we will tell you and you will be on your way.

What happens at a hearing test?

Plan for about 90 minutes on a first visit, and most of it is conversation rather than testing. We look in your ears, test your hearing, and explain your audiogram in plain language in the room. Only if you need them do we demonstrate what hearing aids would sound like for you.

How much do hearing aids cost?

It depends on the technology level and your hearing loss, which is why every fitting starts with a hearing test and an honest recommendation rather than a price list. Every fitting includes a 30-day trial, and financing options may include PowerPay and CareCredit. We check your insurance benefit before your appointment.

Do you accept Geisinger Gold or other insurance?

Yes. We work with Geisinger Gold Medicare Advantage and many other plans, and we verify your hearing benefit before your visit. Bring your insurance card, or call ahead and we will check it in advance.

Do you repair hearing aids or remove earwax?

Yes to both, including devices you bought somewhere else. Cleanings, wax guards and minor repairs are walk-in on open days, no appointment needed. For earwax removal we use the Earigator irrigation system, a safe alternative to ear candling or drug-store kits.

I used to go to your Danville office. Where do I go now?

Here. The Danville office is closed and those patients are seen in Kulpmont, about 15 minutes away via Route 54. Your records came with us and you will see the same person. There is more detail on our Danville page.

Because I was having problems with my hearing aid falling out of my ear often, a longer tubing was installed during the visit. Prescription was also changed to lower the volume. Unfortunately, my issue with louder unwanted surrounding sounds was beyond the capability of these hearing aids. Thanks Nevin — John

Nevin took great care of my son. He checked him out and got him in with an ENT because he knew he needed more care. He ended up needing tubes and Nevin made awesome molds for his ears. He use the ear plugs made especially for him for 2 years! Thanks again for your help in getting us in ASAP with a doctor and the ear plugs. I plan to take my mom to Nevin for her to get hearing aids. Nevin took great care of my father in law and even did a few house calls if he needed something after hours.

I finally convinced my father to schedule with a hearing center. He went to his primary care to have his ear irrigated, which means to have it cleaned out and it was done by the nurse which she perforated his eardrum in the process, causing him significant hearing loss. He did see an ear specialist, they informed him they could do surgery to repair it but my father has been treating cancer the last several years and they chose not to put him through any other procedures. We scheduled an appt with Northeast Hearing Solutions. We got in rather quickly, waiting room is not overcrowded and you did not have to wait very long to go back, maybe just minutes. Marissa who greets you at the front desk is kind, courteous and very personable. Nevin Balliet is the hearing specialist, his knowledge, explanation of the process, and his care and compassion he shows to his patients is exceptional. My father could not hear a word that you spoke, everything had to be written down. I know for my family and myself the frustration to communicate and I can only imagine my father's frustration. So to go from not hearing to being fitted with his hearing aids, what a life changer. The first day he came home with them, he said, wow! I can hear the birds singing, I can hear the dog walking across the floor, etc. My father's resistance on scheduling was him saying, there's probably nothing they can do for me, which he now knows differently. So if you or any family members suffer with hearing loss, know that there is so much they can do to help restore your hearing. I would highly recommend you schedule at Northeast Hearing Solutions. I assure you, you will not be disappointed. I am so grateful to Northeast Hearing Solutions for taking such good care of my father, to be able to have an actual, normal conversation once again, is amazing. From start to end the entire process went very smoothly, you couldn't ask for anything more. Thank you once again to Nevin and Marissa!

After many years of trying to talk my father into getting hearing aides, he finally agreed and we set up an appointment at Northeast Hearing Solutions in Kulpmont with Dr. Balliet. From beginning to end, he made my Dad and I feel important and walked my Dad through the whole process. He uses state of the art equipment to determine what was needed to allow my Dad to hear better. After the hearing test, he explained the results in easy to understand terms and put together a set of hearing aides to test out while in his office. He made adjustments to them until my Dad was comfortable with what he was hearing. He went over my Dad's insurance and gave us the best equipment to meet my Father's needs. No pressure to purchase but once my Dad could hear it was an easy decision. Within two days, we were back at his office so my Dad could receive his hearing aides and Dr. Balliet showed him how to take care of his hearing aides for long lasting and optimum performance. We would highly recommend this business for all your hearing needs. A++++
